Dear Banning Lewis Academy Staff, Students, and Families:
We are pleased to announce that Jeff Spaletta has been hired as our new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). He will also serve as Principal for our Banning Lewis Preparatory Academy campus. Mr. Spaletta officially begins July 1, but he’ll be participating in planning work and meetings throughout June in preparation for the 2019-20 school year.
Jeff Spaletta was born and raised in Eureka, California. He graduated from St. Bernards High School. He has two children, Ashley and Brayden. Ashley is a teacher in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Spaletta enjoys running, traveling and spending time with his two children. He also enjoys outdoor activities, reading and traveling.
Mr. Spaletta has been a lifelong learner, maintaining a strong dedication to his professional and personal development. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Arkansas State University in 1996, followed by a Master’s Degree in 2003. He earned a second Master’s Degree (Educational Leadership) from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2009. In 2017 he completed an Educational Specialist Degree from Arkansas State University in Educational Leadership. He is currently working on a Doctorate Degree from University of New England in Transformational Leadership.
Mr. Spaletta strongly believes that all students can be successful, and this belief has been the driving force behind his successes as a transformational leader. Throughout his career, he has dedicated 20 years to teaching, coaching, leadership, and administration as a Teacher, Coach, Athletic Director, Assistant Principal, Principal, and Director within urban, rural and suburban school districts. He was also appointed to, and served as, a School Board Member.
Mr. Spaletta credits his early teachers, especially his coaches, for entering education as a career. He began his career as a health and physical education teacher. While a graduate student he taught freshman and sophomore level college classes. He spent several years as a middle school science teacher, but the majority of his teaching experience was as a social studies teacher. In 2013 his classroom was designated as a “model classroom” by the Department of Education. Most recently he has served schools as a building leader.
Throughout his administrative career, Mr. Spaletta has specialized in implementing positive change. As a transformational leader, his goals have centered on gaining high achievement for all stakeholders through relevant systems and engaging processes. He believes that data specific planning, through shared collaboration, is vital to organizational success. Mr. Spaletta has successfully helped schools by providing resources and services in alignment with raising student achievement and closing learning gaps. All of the schools he has overseen as a school leader have improved their school culture and performance, while academic achievement and school safety have also improved tremendously. His work in multiple school turnaround efforts has resulted in significant improvements on math and literacy test scores, higher graduation rates, and increased parent involvement.
Mr. Spaletta’s strengths as a school leader have always been his collaborative nature, transparent leadership style, and innovative school improvement initiatives. In past roles, he has enjoyed collaborating in school improvement plans, applied for and received a $4M school improvement grant, conducted large scale parent events, collaborated with the Mexican Consulate to develop a Plaza Community "Plaza Communitaria", and worked with the school community to develop College and Career Pathways, as well as implemented a pilot alternative school. Mr. Spaletta has been able to succeed in these endeavors due to his ability to receive buy-in from students, staff, community and parents because of his use of distributive leadership principles.
Mr. Spaletta’s outreach extends not just to students, parents and staff, but also to the greater community as well. He has often lobbied on behalf of schools/districts, working with the media to develop positive public relations, engaging multiple community partners and businesses for career pathways opportunities for students, and building positive relationships with politicians to advocate for the school community.
